Getting to School & Arrival

Plan to have your child on-time everyday.

8:35am: Doors Open

  • Grades 1-6 will enter at the main lobby Door #1.
  • Kindergarten will enter Door #3, just to the left of the main entrance. From the sidewalk, you'll see a ramp with a black railing.
  • Bus riders enter at Door #4

8:55am: Tardy Bell Rings

  • Students who are not inside their classroom by 8:55am are considered tardy. Families should plan ahead to arrive at school by 8:40am to allow for time to travel to class.

Getting to School

Whether a student is a walker, a bus rider or car rider, they are expected to follow the rules of safety, respect & responsibility.

Walkers:

All walkers must stay on the sidewalks and obey the crossing guards. Only cross Linton Lane where the crossing guard is posted. Students in Grades 1-6 will the school at Door #1 and either go to the cafeteria to pick up breakfast or go directly to class. Kindergarten students will enter at Door #3.

Parents/guardians are welcome to walk their child to the class door in the morning.  Please note that this is not a time for a parent-teacher conference. If parents have something important to share, the teacher will be happy to set up a time when they can devote their full attention to the matter. Kindergarten parents will exit via Door #3, and Grade 1-6 parents will exit Door #11.

No pets are allowed on the Fort Hunt campus. While morning is a great time to walk a dog, they cannot come on the school campus at arrival or any other time. This is to ensure all students are safe.

Bus Riders:

Only students who have permission to ride the bus may do so. Bus privileges may be removed for inappropriate behavior. Students may only ride the bus they are assigned to.

Car Riders:

How should cars approach the school?

Our school is on Linton Lane. Plan to access Linton Lane from Elkin Street. This will set you up to make a seamless right turn into the school driveway. If you are coming from the GW Parkway, take Vernon View Drive all the way to Elkin.  We can only have cars making a right turn into the driveway from Linton.

Can't I just park at the curb on Linton and drop off up my child there?

NO. This is unsafe and blocks the flow of traffic. Our Kiss & Ride lane is the fastest and safest way to drop off/pick up your child.

Which side of the car should my child exit the car?

All students must exit on the passenger side of the car. All students in Grades 1-6 will enter Door 1. All kindergarten students will enter at Door 3 which is just past Door 1 via a ramp. A sign will be there indicating where kindergarten students enter.

What can parents do to make Kiss & Ride safe for everyone?

Follow the procedures and directions from staff. Stay in your car--patrols and staff will help with unloading. Respect the cones. Stay calm. Expect that this procedure will be busy and might not go as smoothly as you like at first. Allow for extra time to get to your next destination.

Bike Riders:

Students may ride their bikes to school. Bike racks are located by entrances 4 and 11.

  • Bicyclists should follow these guidelines:
    • Obey the police crossing guard, safety patrols, and automobile traffic rules, including signaling for turns and stopping at intersections.
    • Walk your bike in from the street to the school.
  • Bicycle helmets are mandatory to ride to school, and a bicycle lock is highly recommended. Fort Hunt & FCPS cannot assume responsibility for bikes.
