Food, Drink & Meals at Fort Hunt
If your child has a food allergy, please make sure it is noted on their Health Information Form.
Breakfast:
All students who arrive on-time (bus delays are the exceptions) will have breakfast available from 8:35-8:50am. Students will take their grab-n-go breakfast to the classroom.
School Lunch:
- Students will have 30 minutes to eat lunch.
- Because we are focused on teaching and maintaining appropriate behavior & routines in our cafeteria, families, parents and guests may not join students for lunch. It can create an unnecessary distraction. Students may not be taken out of the cafeteria to eat in the hallway as this creates a safety issue of not being able to account for a student in the event of an emergency. We will reassess this policy at the end of the first quarter.
- Families can join students for lunch on Friday, November 8 when we have our Veterans Day Family Lunch. Watch for more details.
- Families can view the menus by scrolling down the list of schools and selecting "Fort Hunt."
Meal Prices for this year:
Breakfast: $1.75 Lunch: $3.25

Special Diets
All dietary accommodations requests will be processed via a centralized form(s), which can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/dietary-accommodations. Any information pertaining to dietary accommodations, including, menu communication, requests, etc., will be through our [email protected]. Please note, that forms will only need to be submitted once throughout the student’s enrollment unless there are medical changes.
- Medical Dietary Accommodation Form - this is for any student who needs medical food accommodation (including allergies). This form must be signed by a healthcare practitioner.
- Milk Substitution Form- this is for any student who can not drink cow's milk. This form must be signed by a parent/guardian.
Medical discontinuation form: if a student no longer has a medical accommodation that is still on file with FNS, parents need to complete this form.
Once the form has been completed and received, through our centralized email address, our Registered Dietitians will create a menu based on the student’s dietary needs. These menus will closely align with the cafeteria menu and will be sent to our kitchen manager and families prior to service.
Free/Reduced Meals (FRM)
- FRM eligibility carryover from SY 23-24 is valid for the first thirty (30) school days. Households will be required to submit a new application by October 1, 2024.
- Meal applications for this school year are available online via https://www.fcps.edu/frm, and paper applications will be sent to new students and households that applied with a paper application in school year 23-24.
- Schools and FNS managers will receive a limited number of paper applications as we want to encourage parents/guardians to apply online. When a student is approved for FRM, a letter is emailed to the household confirming eligibility.
- Approval letters may be used to qualify for other benefits. Those requesting copies of approval letters should email FNS at: [email protected]
Packed Lunch:
- Students may choose to bring their own lunch.
- Label all lunchboxes with your child’s name.
- Please send food that is easy to open and access. There is NO microwave for reheating.
- There are some items that are not permitted: Sodas, fast food, anything in a glass bottle.
Snack:
Your child’s teacher will share whether or not they will have a snack and what the expectations are in addition to the same ones for lunch. Because students in Grades 5 & 6 have a late lunch this year, we are asking that students pack a snack to be eaten at the teacher's direction late morning.
Birthdays:
We do not celebrate individual birthdays in the classrooms at Fort Hunt ES. Instead we celebrate through our morning news announcements and once a month. One day a month, our PTA sponsors a Birthday Book & Cupcake Day. All students with birthdays in that month will receive a cupcake and a book during their scheduled lunch time. July birthdays will be celebrated in June, and August birthdays will be celebrated in September.
Do not send in birthday treats with your child. As noted above, parents/family members are not permitted to join students in the cafeteria.
Water bottles:
Students should have a water bottle with their name on it. We have 3 water filling stations - one in our main hallway, one near the 1st grade pod and one upstairs. We encourage students to fill their bottle throughout the day. Bottles of juice, tea, etc., are not permitted in the classroom because they can create a mess. Juice is fine at lunch. Soda is not allowed.
